DivergentScience-fiction movie Divergent is based on the first book in the New York Times best-selling novel series written by Veronica Roth.

The film stars Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now) as Beatrice, or “Tris,” who’s coming of age in a world where everyone’s separated into different factions based on their strengths. Triss’ problems start when she discovers that her strengths could put her in multiple factions, making her “divergent.”

When Tris finds out about a plot that puts everyone in all the factions at risk, she joins with Four (Theo James, Underworld: Awakening), an instructor for the militant faction Dauntless, to uncover the conspiracy.

Directed by Neil Burger (Limitless) on a screenplay by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Vanessa Taylor (TV’s Game of Thrones), Divergent also stars Ashley Judd (Frida), Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Ray Stevenson (The Three Musketeers), Miles Teller (That Awkward Moment), Tony Goldwyn (Conviction), Maggie Q (Priest), Mekhi Phifer (TV’s Lie to Me) and Kate Winslet (Mildred Pierce).

Critcs panned Divergent, but moviegoers lauded it, possibly an extension of their love of the books. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored 41% with the former and 76% with the latter. And the PG-13 movie earned a whopping $147 million at the box office.
