James Franco (127 Hours) directs and co-stars in the 2013 crime drama Child of God, based on the chilling 1973 novel by Cormac McCarthy.
Scott Haze (As I Lay Dying) stars as Appalachian man Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man – one the narrator describes as “a child of God much like yourself.” Deprived first of his family and then his home, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller, falling deeper into a disturbing life of crime and degradation.
Also starring Tim Blake Nelson (Lincoln), Franco’s screen adaptation of McCarthy’s highly regarded novel (Franco also co-wrote the screenplay with Vince Jolivette) received mixed reviews from the press upon its limited release to U.S. theaters in earlier this month. But it’s worth noting that the critics who gave it a positive nod were genuinely enthusiastic with their praise. Manohla Dargis at The New York Times wrote that Franco’s “very fine adaptation” remained true to the spirit of McCarthy’s “short, pitiless novel.”
The R-rated Child of God fared better on the festival circuit than in theaters, with Franco being as a filmmaker for the Golden Lion at the 2013 Venice Film Festival and Haze winning the award for Breakthrough Performer at the 2013 Hamptons International Film Festival.
