Sam Peckinpah’s 1978 trucker epic Convoy is movie based around the hit song by C.W. McCall.
The action drama—and unintentional comedy, of sorts—stars Kris Kristofferson (A Star is Born) as a long-distance trucker known as Rubber Duck who’s on the run from the corrupt sheriff Lyle Wallace (Ernest Borgnine, Johnny Guitar). The Duck makes a call on his CB radio asking for assistance from other truckers, many of whom have also fallen foul of Wallace in the past. What follows is a massive truckers’ convoy, plenty of CB banter, a whole lot of smashed-up police cars, and the allure of co-star Ali MacGraw (Love Story).
Also featuring Burt Young and Seymour Cassel, the Blu-ray of the PG-rated Convoy includes a slew of special features, including an audio commentary by film historians Paul Seydor, Garner Simmons and Nick Redman, deleted scenes, trailers, TV and radio spots, stills and the in-depth featurette “Passion & Poetry – Sam’s Trucker Movie.”
Hard as it may be to believe, this cult entry was one of the greatest financial successes for Peckinpah, the filmmaker who gave us The Wild Bunch, The Getaway, Straw Dogs and Ride the High Country.
