The seventh Argentine film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (following 2009’s The Secret in Their Eyes, which took home the prize), writer/director Damián Szifron’s Wild Tales is true to its title, offering a half-dozen spirited—make that, er, rowdy—short stories featuring characters who lose their cool and behave in, her, rowdy ways.
The tales are all fresh, fun and, indeed, wild: a plane-full of people realize they’re all connected to a man named Gabriel Pasternak; a bedraggled waitress seeks revenge after recognizing a customer who has driven; a frustrated urbanite in the demolition business takes matters into his own hands with the city’s parking violations bureau; a bride turns her wedding into a crazed celebration to remember when she learns that her groom has been unfaithful; and a father and his manservant clean up a fatal hit-and-run accident caused by his son. And, in the best of the bunch, a road rage incident turns bloody and out-of-control, ultimately ending with a gay joke.
All well-acted and smartly mounted—the tone and pace of each vary though they all similarly speak of their protagonists’ need to vent their fury when they feel they’ve been wronged—Wild Tales is a wildly entertaining and accessible Spanish-language offering. Moreover, it’s one to suggest to those who don’t hit up the foreign language section with any frequency when making their movie picks for the weekend.
