When Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) appeared on Andy Cohen’s silly talk show Watch What Happens Live back in 2012, the motor-mouthed host asked the three-time Oscar winner to name one bad film she made. Ms. Streep replied, “Still Of The Night,” a 1982 crime drama.
You can see if you agree with her when Kino’s Lorber releases the Blu-ray edition of the film in August!
Streep stars as the enigmatic art house auctioneer Brooke Reynolds. Following the murder of her married lover, she visits the office of his psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Rice (Roy Scheider, Sorcerer), to leave a wristwatch for the man’s wife. Sam is immediately fascinated by the aloof beauty, whom he’s come to know through her lover’s therapy. When he finds that her father died mysteriously and that she strongly resembles a woman who’s been stalking him, the psychiatrist becomes even more obsessed with her. Both fearing and desiring Brooke, he’s plagued by nightmares that he’ll be her next victim…
To its credit, Still of the Night is striking photographed by Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven) and competently directed by Robert Benton (Places in the Heart) but, yeah, it’s a pretty bad and silly sub-par Hitchcock knock-off.
But, what the hell, check it out to see if you agree with Meryl…
