Director Hal Ashby’s (Harold and Maude) pictorially gorgeous and uniquely stirring 1976 music-filled biographical drama Bound for Glory, the screen version of Woody Guthrie’s autobiography, arrives on Blu-ray from Twilight Time.
The renowned troubadour’s travels are lovingly recreated across scenic California locations and photographed by the great cinematographer Haskell Wexler (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Days of Heaven) in painterly detail that invests the film with an epic sweep and a nostalgic intimacy that decisively makes the case for Guthrie (David Carradine, The Long Riders) as a vagabond man of the people.
Carradine was the National Board of Review’s choice as the year’s Best Actor. Wexler and musical adaptor Leonard Rosenman each won their second Academy Awards for their work here, and the film garnered four other Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Wexler also won Los Angeles Film Critics and National Society of Film Critics Awards for his cinematography. Ronny Cox (Deliverance), Melinda Dillon (F.I.S.T.) and Randy Quaid (The Long Riders) excel in supporting roles.
As supplier Twilight Time prints up only 3,000 copies of each title, be sure to keep an eye on the Twilight Time site or that of their distributor Screen Archives’s for the announcement of the prebook date (usually 2-3 weeks before the title’s street date) and get ready to reserve!
