Christian Petzold’s evocative and haunting 2014 German drama Phoenix, set in a rubble-strewn Berlin in 1945, is a unique film about post–World War II Jewish identity.

Nina Hoss faces the future in Phoenix.

Nina Hoss faces the future in Phoenix.

After surviving Auschwitz, a former cabaret singer (We Are The Night’s Nina Hoss), her face disfigured and reconstructed, returns to her war-ravaged hometown to seek out the gentile husband who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis. Without recognizing her, he enlists her to play his wife in a bizarre hall-of-shattered-mirrors story that’s as metaphorical as it is engrossing.

Revenge film or tale of romantic reconciliation? One doesn’t know until the memorable closing scene of this marvel from filmmaker Petzold (the Oscar-nominated Barbara, which also stars Ms. Hoss) who has quickly become a leading figure in contemporary German cinema.

Presented in German with English subtitles, Criterion’s DVD and Blu-ray editions of the movie include the following:
