The 2006 documentary film Matthew Barney: No Restraint follows renowned artist Barney (best known for his inimitable “Cremaster Cycle) and his collaborator (and former lover), singer-songwriter Björk, as they embark on a filmmaking journey in Japan.
In No Restraint, directed by Alison Chernick, we learn how exactly Barney used 45,000 pounds of petroleum jelly, a factory whaling vessel, and traditional Japanese rituals to create an art project? Apparently, Barney plowed the waters off the coast of Nagasaki to film his massive endeavor, “Drawing Restraint 9” (2005).
The “plot” of the narrative sculpture that is “Drawing Restraint 9” tells a fantastical love story of two characters that transform from land mammals into whales.
