You might not recognize the name Stephen Tobolowsky but you certainly know his face. One of the most proficient character actors of the past 40 years, Tobolowsky has appeared in over 200 television shows and films, including Groundhog Day, Thelma & Louise, Memento, Mississippi Burning, Deadwood and Silicon Valley. Undeniably, he boasts one of the most dazzlingly diverse filmographies on the planet.
But even more compelling than the stories Tobolowsky’s been a part of onscreen are those he tells off-screen. In The Primary Instinct, Stephen plays himself and uses the art of storytelling to take the audience through a riveting and moving journey about life, love and Hollywood.
Directed by David Chen (his first feature-length documentary), The Primary Instinct examines the basic questions: What is a story? What makes a good story? Why do we tell them? In a stage setting, Tobolowsky affably recounts various events in his life, brief vignettes of time that are woven together in an examination of how humans bond over shared experiences. His stories are humorous and poignant—he is not doing standup, but using conversational comedy to engage, entertain and provoke.
Take this intimate journey with a master storyteller and you just may learn something about yourself.
Bonus features including additional interviews with Tobolowsky and a bonus story, “The Light of the First Day,” shot during the early stages of the film’s production.
