As India celebrates the 70th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, acclaimed writer-director Gurinder Chadha’s (Bend It Like Beckham) drama about the tumultuous events that occurred in India in 1947, Viceroy’s House starring Hugh Bonneville (TV’s Downton Abbey) and Gillian Anderson (TV’s The X-Files), arrives on DVD.

India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten (Bonneville) is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina (Anderson), to New Delhi to oversee the country’s transition from British rule to independence. Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power. But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves to be no easy undertaking…

The IFC Films theatrical release, an Official Selection at the Berlin International Film Festival, also stars Michael Gambon (Harry Potter franchise), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Manish Dayal (The Hundred-Foot Journey) and Lily Travers (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
