Studio: Facets

Facets will release Luis Buñuel’s (Belle de Jour) 1951 film Susana on DVD next week.

In the film, an unstable young woman named Susana (Rosita Quintana) escapes from a reformatory for very wayward girls and deceptively finds shelter in the gorgeous Mexican farming estate of a nice and decent family. Little by little, Susana causes unrest and discord among the members of the household, until they are virtually fighting with each other.

Susana highlights the fragility of the bourgeoisie family and the hypocrisy of the seemingly honorable characters. With only the slightest temptation from a beautiful woman, even the most upstanding characters toss aside the constraints of morality. In Susana, Buñuel reveals both the power of female sexuality and the inability of society to contain it.

Presented in Spanish with English subtitles, this lesser-known film from Buñuel’s Mexican period co-stars Fernando Soler and Víctor Manuel Mendoza.
