From 1977, the adventure-comedy Checkered Flag or Crash is considered to be one of the first Hollywood movies about off-road racing.

Joe Don Baker (Charley Varrick) is “Walkaway” Madden, a reckless race car driver who tends to walk away from crashes without a scratch. Susan Sarandon (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) is C.C. Wainwright, a tenacious photojournalist who joins Walkaway on the Manila 1000, a three-day, off-road race through the Philippine jungle. Wackiness ensues…
