Old Dogs was pretty much universally panned by critics, but it’s not as bad as they say if you’re the right audience.
The story, of two older men trying to make the deal of a lifetime when two children come into their life, is not the highlight of this movie. The fun part is the goofyness, and that part will be enjoyed by young kids and anyone else who likes to get silly every now and then. It’s as if stars John Travolta (Blow Out) and Robin Williams (Mrs. Doubtfire) got together and decided to make a movie for kids.
Travolta even brought his family along for the ride. Wife Kelly Preston (Jerry Maguire) plays Williams’ love interest, and daughter Ella Bleu Travolta plays one of a pair of fraternal twins who Williams fathered seven years earlier. Also in the cast are funny people Matt Dillon (Armored), Seth Green (Austin Powers movies), comedian Bernie Mac (which shows how old this movie is, as he died in August 2008), Ann-Margret (Grumpy Old Men) and Rita Wilson (Sleepless in Seattle), all playing over-the-top silly.
The kid-friendly feel is followed through in the colorful menu and special features. The commentary track (featuring director Walt Becker, producer Andrew Panay and writers David Diamond and David Weissman) will appeal more to adults, but the featurette “Young Dogs Learn Old Tricks” is nice for the whole family. In it, Ella interviews her dad, who is obviously very proud of his young daughter, and her movie twin Conner Rayburn interviews Williams.
There’s also deleted scenes and two music videos, one for Bryan Adams’ “You’ve Been a Friend to Me,” and one with Travolta and Ella singing and dancing “Every Little Step.” Seeing John Travolta skip around in the latter might be a little disturbing to anyone older than 8.
The Blu-ray version of Old Dogs includes the DVD and digital copy, which is a plus for families.
