Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief splashed onto DVD and Blu-ray on June 29, 2010, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
The movie is based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan grossed $87 million in theaters, a far cry from the $317 million of the first Harry Potter movie, to which Percy Jackson has had comparisons. Percy also faced criticism from critics and fans because of the departures that were taken from the book.
Written by Chris Titley (his first feature film screenplay credit) and directed by Chris Columbus (the helmer of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), Percy Jackson tells the story of the titular character, who discovers his father is the Greek god Poseidon. Olympus is alive and kicking and stationed somewhere over the Empire State Building, but someone has stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt and the gods suspect Jackson. The 17-year-old (11-year-old in the first book) teams up with some other demi-gods and tries to set things straight.
The effects-heavy movie stars Logan Lerman (Gamer) as Jackson, Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings) as Zeus, Grey’s Anatomy‘s Kevin McKidd as Poseidon and Uma Thurman as Medusa.
Priced at $29.98, the DVD includes five deleted scenes, a “Discover Your Powers” quiz and a featurette about bringing the book to the screen (maybe explaining some of the changes fans hated, we’ll see).
The Blu-ray, priced at $39.99, includes the same bonuses as the DVD plus, a downloadable digital copy of the film, five more deleted scenes and the featurettes “Secrets of the Gods” (about the visual effects, we’re guessing), “Inside Camp Half-Blood” (the camp from the book and movie where all demi-gods go to learn about their powers), “On Set With Brandon T. Jackson (who played Percy’s best friend Grover) and “Meet the Demi-gods” (presumably about the cast).
