Jackie Chan action comedy The Spy Next Door was released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 18, 2010.
Lionsgate‘s PG movie features the martial arts star using his skills for something new: babysitting. Chan plays a spy whose cover is blown when he looks after his neighbor’s kids and they accidentally download secret codes on his computer. The bad guys come after them, and Chan must fight them off in the middle of suburbia, while keeping the kids out of harm and trouble.
Spy looking after rowdy kids is nothing knew for Hollywood. Remember Vin Diesel’s The Pacifier? Chan’s new version made considerably less at the box office, $25 million compared to Pacifier’s $113 million.
But for family viewing, the 95-minute The Spy Next Door has the Dove Foundation Seal of Approval and is endorsed by Kids First!. And Chan’s no stranger to comedic action flicks: Rush Hour ($141 million), Shanghai Noon ($57 million), The Tuxedo ($50 million). His The Karate Kid remake bows in theaters on June 11.
Also in the Spy Next Door cast are Amber Valletta (Gamer), comedian George Lopez (Swing Vote) and singer Billy Ray Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie).
The movie was priced at $29.95 on DVD and $39.99 on Blu-ray (a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack). The movie was made available for download on May 18 too.
Special features on the DVD and Blu-ray are:
- a blooper reel,
- featurette “Jackie Chan: Stunt Master and Mentor” and
- featurette “Adventures in Acting with the kids from The Spy Next Door.”
