Syfy mini-series Riverworld arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on June 22, 2010, priced at $19.93 and $24.99, respectively.
The second televised version of the books by Philip Jose Farmer (an earlier movie starring Brad Johnson aired in 2003), Riverworld is about a group of people from Earth who are resurrected on a strange planet filled with endless rivers. Among the group are an American journalist (Tahmoh Penikett of TV’s Dollhouse and Battlestar Galactica) looking his lover (Laura Vandervoort of TV’s V) who died with him in an explosion, a female warrior from the 13th century and Mark Twain, resurrected as a young riverboat cabin. The group travels upriver looking for answers and are being watched by an alien force.
According to Syfy, the television mini-series premiered to the highest rating of a Sunday primetime TV show this year, with 2.1 million viewers.
Riverworld also stars Alan Cumming (Spy Kids) and Peter Wingfield (TV’s Caprica).
Both the DVD and Blu-ray versions include a behind-the-scenes featurette with Cumming.
The RHI Entertainment-produced science-fiction mini-series is distributed on DVD and Blu-ray by Vivendi Entertainment.
