HBO‘s The Pacific, another war mini-series from the trio behind the best-selling Band of Brothers (Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman ), arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 2, 2010.
The six-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets, priced at $79.99 and $99.98, respectively, include all 10 episodes of The Pacific, which aired on HBO in March.
The mini-series tracks the real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines during World War II. Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale of The Departed), Eugene Sledge (Joseph Mazzello of The Sensation of Sight) and John Basilone (Jon Seda of Close to Home) are followed through their first battle with the Japanese at Guadalchanal, rain forests of Cape Gloucester, strongholds of Peleliu, bloody sands of Iwo Jima, and others.
The mini-series is based on the books Helmet for My Pillow
Both the DVD and Blu-ray extend the story of the mini-series with these special features:
- “Historical Backgrounds” five-minute prologues that set the stage for each episode and additional historical footage narrated by Tom Hanks
- “Making The Pacific”
- “Profiles of The Pacific” look at the lives of the real Marines featured in The Pacific., including a personal perspective on their families, their war experience and their lives after the war
- “Anatomy of The Pacific War” about the historical influences and cultural perceptions
The Blu-ray adds two interactive features:
- “The Pacific Enhanced Viewing” picture-in-picture feature with exclusive content, including interviews with historians and veterans, archival footage, maps and more.
- “The Pacific Field Guide,” which allows viewers to navigate through the major events featured in The Pacific, including animated maps, extensive interviews with historians and veterans, historical footage, photographs and more.
