Warner Home Video celebrated the 25th birthday of 1980s adventure favorite The Goonies with a 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD on Nov. 2, 2010.
Starring Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), Martha Plimpton (200 Cigarettes) and Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix, Deadly Impact), the movie tells the story of a group of kids who follow a treasure map into an underground realm of twisting passages, booby-traps and a long lost pirate ship.
The PG-rated family film has quite the collection of names behind-the-scenes. The movie was directed by Richard Donner (Superman), written by Chris Columbus (director of Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief) and is based on a story by Steven Spielberg (War of the Worlds).
Warner packed The Goonies 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition with a new board game, collectible storyboard prints, a reprint of a 2009 article with updates on the cast and filmmakers and a 1985 souvenir magazine with the behind-the-scenes stories about filming in Astoria, Ore., including production design that transformed Astoria into the “Goon Docks.”
Special features on the discs include:
- commentary with Donner and actors
- “The Making of The Goonies” documentary
- music video for Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R Good Enough”
- theatrical trailer
- and deleted scenes.
The DVD was priced at $39.92 and Blu-ray at $49.99. This is not the movie’s Blu-ray debut, as a high-definition disc was released in 2001 with the same special features.
The Goonies‘ 25th anniversary celebration also included a shop in Astoria featuring Goonies merchandise and a series of events in the city.
The movie also was made available for digital download and on demand on Nov. 2.
