Based on the best-selling novel by Stieg Larsson, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a thrilling, thoroughly enjoyable film — even if you haven’t read the book.
The story centers around the rich, powerful Vanger family and the unsolved disappearance of 16-year-old Harriet Vanger (Ewa Froling), a mystery that her uncle still obsesses over, even after 40 years. In a final attempt to solve the mystery, the uncle hires disgraced journalist Mikael Blomvist (Michael Nyqvist), who enlists the help of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace)—the girl with the dragon tattoo.
The two leads are intriguingly flawed characters with personal troubles of their own. Mikael has been framed in a case against a financial corporation; Lisbeth has a verbally and sexually abusive relationship with her parole officer … as well as a dark past. But these story lines are secondary to the core mystery, which keeps you guessing until the near end. Though more than two hours, the film moves along at a steady clip as each clue unfolds, and you hardly notice the time.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo already has a built-in audience and was the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the U.S. in 2010.
The DVD doesn’t have any special features, but that’s not unusual on a foreign film. Besides, with a movie this good, we don’t need anything else.
