Filmmaker Ken Russell’s (Altered States) ultra-extravagant Tommy, the 1975 film based on The Who’s rock opera and best-selling album of the same name, came out to Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for the first time on Sept. 7, 2010, carrying a suggested retail price of $24.95.
Tommy, which features The Who frontman Roger Daltrey in the titular role, is about a psychomatically deaf, dumb and blind boy who becomes a master pinball player and object of a cult.
The musical film won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress for a Musical or Comedy (Ann-Margret) and was nominated for two Oscars: Best Actress (Ann-Margret) and Best Music (Pete Townshend).
Digitally restored, the Blu-ray disc offers the original theatrical trailer and Sony’s branded MovieIQ+sync, which allows users to access real-time information on the cast, music, trivia and more via BD-Live while watching the movie.
The Blu-ray also has a remastered 5.1 soundtrack in addition to the original 5.0 Quintaphonic track, the one and only cinematic example of a then-revolutionary format that used five discrete channels of sound to deliver the music of the film, including hit “Pinball Wizard,” in a “Sound in the Round” manner.
A guilty 1970s pleasure if there ever was one, Tommy offers such aural delights as Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John and even Jack Nicholson and Oliver Reed covering a handful of classic tracks by The Who, along with the undeniable pleasure of watching Ann-Margret rolling around in a zillion gallons of soap bubbles, baked beans and milk chocolate during her infamous nervous breakdown scene.
