One of the biggest summer hits in 2010, animated movie How to Train Your Dragon was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 15, 2010. The comedy, which is based on the children’s novel by Cressida Cowell, grossed $213 million in theaters and stars the voices of Gerard Butler (The Bounty Hunter), Jonah Hill, (Get Him to the Greek) America Ferrera (TV’s Ugly Betty) and Kristen Wiig (MacGruber).
The story of a young viking who befriends his clan’s deadliest enemy, a dragon, the PG-rated family movie was released as a DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD combo. How to Train Your Dragon also was available on Blu-ray 3D as part of Samsung’s 3D starter kit for a limited time, according to Paramount Home Entertainment.
Like older DreamWorks Animation movies Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar, distributor Paramount also released How to Train Your Dragon in a double-DVD pack with the new animated adventure Legend of the BoneKnapper Dragon. The BoneKnapper short also included in the Blu-ray/DVD combo package.
The DVD of How to Train Your Dragon contains these special features:
- filmmaker’s commentary
- “Viking Sized Cast” interviews
- and “Tech of Dragon” featurette.
The Blu-ray will offer those plus:
- “Animator’s Corner” featurette
- and trivia track.
And the Blu-ray/DVD combo package includes all of those as well as:
- “The Way We See It” featurette
- “Meet Cressida Cowell” featurette with the author of the original novel
- “Going for the Gold” featurette
- “How to Draw a Dragon” featurette
- “Dragon Training Final Exam” featurette
- deleted scenes
- and DreamWorks Animation Jukebox.
The Dragon Double DVD Pack was priced at $19.99 and the Blu-ray/DVD combo at $24.99.

This was possibly the best 3d animated movie I’ve ever seen.
