Science-fiction fans can rejoice. The Star Wars movies will get their high-definition debut in the fall of 2011.
George Lucas made the announced today at fan convention Celebration V’s Main Event, where the Star Wars creator was interviewed by The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart. According to a StarWars.com report, the movies’ Blu-ray release was the most frequently asked question submitted online prior to the Event.
“I wish I could say it was coming out this year,” Lucas said, “but it will come out next year.”
All six Star Wars movies — The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi — will be released in one Blu-ray boxed set along with special features.
Among the special features will be deleted scenes, one of which from Return of the Jedi was shown at the Event. In the sequence, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker assembles his new green-bladed lightsaber and places it into R2-D2’s dome before going to Jabba the Hutt. Hamill introduced the scene at the Event.
Titles from the Star Wars franchise are released on DVD and Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
That’s awesome news… kind of sucks that it’s going to be ALL the movies in a box set.

I agree, Naz. 🙂 My guess is that it’ll follow the Lord of the Rings release, with the movies released individually months after the box set. We’ll see.
