Oliver Stone’s 1987 Wall Street might be an energizing, intelligent and diabolical delight, but the just-released repackaged DVD version, Wall Street: Insider Trading Edition, is as inflated and unlikely to bring profit to the wise as a junk bond.
“Greed is good,” Michael Douglas’s Gordon Gekko intones in one of Wall Street’s endlessly quoted moments, and 20th Century Fox appears to be taking the corporate raider at his word with this weakly supplemented re-issue on the eve of the theatrical release of Stone’s long-awaited sequel, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
The supplements that were produced for the 2007 20th Anniversary Edition of Wall Street — an introduction by Stone, a pair of featurettes, and a few deleted scenes — are not included in this latest version. They’ve been replaced with a “Fact Exchange” feature that functions like a pop-up video trivia track, a Fox Legacy With Tom Rothman segment that has been broadcast to death on the Fox Movie Channel, a minute-and-a-half-long promotional bit featuring Stone and the cast of the sequel that’s bound to pop up on cable any minute now — if it hasn’t already — and the new film’s theatrical trailer. And that’s it (along with Stone’s previously recorded commentary track from years ago).
Unlike Gekko’s greed, this edition is not good. If you’re looking for a Wall Street DVD, you’d be better off investing in the out-of-print but easy-to-find 20th Anniversary Edition.
