New Release: Cronos Blu-ray and DVD

Cronos, the feature film directorial debut of the great director Guillermo del Toro ( Pan’s Labyrinth), got the Criterion special edition treatment when the highbrow label released DVD and Blu-ray editions of the 1993 fantasy movie on Dec. 7, 2010. Each was priced at $29.98 and $39.98, respectively.

Cronos is a highly unorthodox horror movie about the seductiveness of the idea of immortality. Kindly antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi, Men With Guns) happens upon an ancient golden device in the shape of a scarab and soon finds himself the possessor and victim of its sinister, addictive powers, as well as the target of a mysterious, crude American named Angel (Ron Perlman of del Toro’s Hellboy).

Featuring marvelous special makeup effects and the unforgettably haunting imagery for which del Toro has become world-renowned, Cronos is a visually rich and emotionally captivating dark fantasy.

Del Toro and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro supervised and approved the new, restored high-definition digital transfer. The Criterion disc includes an optional audio track with the film’s Spanish-language voice-over introduction, as well as DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition and new and improved English subtitle translation, also approved by del Toro.

The DVD and Blu-ray each contain the following director-approved special features:

  • two audio commentaries, one featuring del Toro and the other producers Arthur H. Gorson and Bertha Navarro and co-producer Alejandro Springall
  • Geometria, an unreleased 1987 short horror film by del Toro, finished by the director in 2010, plus a new video interview with him
  • “Welcome to Bleak House,” a video tour by del Toro of his office, featuring his collectibles and personal work
  • new video interviews with del Toro, Navarro and actor Ron Perlman
  • video interview with actor Federico Luppi
  • stills gallery
  • trailer
  • booklet featuring an essay by film critic Maitland McDonagh and excerpts from del Toro’s notes for the film.

The Criterion Blu-ray release is not the high-definition debut of Cronos, which was released on Blu-ray in 2007.
