New Releases: The Color Purple and Malcolm X Blu-ray

The Color Purple

In anticipation of 2011’s Black History Month in February, Warner Home Video planned to issue both Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple (1985) and Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992) on Blu-ray Disc on Jan. 25, 2011. Unfortunately, Warner canceled its Blu-ray release of Malcolm X due to disputes over music rights. (As of this writing, the studio was trying to resolve these disputes, but Amazon is prepared for a future release, allowing fans to pre-order the Blu-ray.)

The Color Purple Blu-ray carried a suggested retail price of $34.99 for a Digi-book Blu-ray edition, which includes a sturdy, book-like cover and colorful artwork, or $24.98 for a no-frills, traditionally packaged Blu-ray edition.

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple is a richly textured, powerful film that tells the story of Celie, a young black girl growing up in America’s rural south in the early 1900s.

Malcolm X

Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost), winner of the Best Actress Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination, makes a triumphant screen debut as the radiant, indomitable Celie. Her impressive portrayal is complimented by a distinguished cast that includes Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), Oprah Winfrey (TV’s The Oprah Winfrey Show), Margaret Avery (The Set Up), Adolph Caesar (A Soldier’s Story) and Rae Dawn Chong (Commando).

Malcolm X is the biography of the famous African American leader who was originally born Malcolm Little. Portrayed by Denzel Washington (Training Day), Malcolm X’s life is recounted in the movie from when he was a young gangster, up though his conversion to the Islamic religion and subsequent controversial teachings that ended with his assassination. The film co-stars Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got To Do With It), Albert Hall (Apocalypse Now), Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty) and Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing).
