2008 science-fiction action movie Death Race got a prequel on Jan. 18, 2011, when Universal Studios Home Entertainment releases Death Race 2 on DVD and Blu-ray.
The unrated film, which is planned for a home entertainment premiere instead of theatrical release, stars Luke Goss (Hellboy II: The Golden Army), Danny Trejo (Predators), Ving Rhames (Surrogates) and Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) and tells the story of how the Death Race began.
In the near future, the United States economy declines and violent crime spirals out of control. To contain the population, a network of private prisons are opened, the worst of which is Terminal Island, where inmates fight each other in a highly rated televised death match. A convicted cop killer (Goss) arrives on the Island to serve a life sentence just as the death matches evolve into the ultimate reality show, the Death Race. The prison yard is changed into a demolition derby that pits prisoners against each other in heavily armed vehicles. The winner gets freedom, but first he has to survive.
Paul W.S. Anderson, who wrote and directed the original movie, produced Death Race 2, with legendary filmmaker Roger Corman executive producing. Corman also produced Anderson’s Death Race as well as 1975 movie Death Race 2000, starring Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables).
Universal’s Blu-ray and DVD includes these special features:
- deleted scenes with introduction by director Roel Reine
- deleted shots montage with introduction by Reine
- “The Race Begins: The Evolution of the Death Race” featurette on how the prequel fits with into the franchise
- “Cheating Death: The Stunts of Death Race 2“
- “Fast Cars and Firearms: The Cars of Death Race 2“
- and commentary by Reine.
The Blu-ray, which is a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, also contains Universal’s usual features:
- BD-Live web access
- Pocket Blu app that turns smartphones into remotes and allows mobiles to download bonus content
- and UHear, which skips back a few seconds and turns on subtitles it you miss a word.
Death Race 2 also was released for digital download the same day.
