New Release: Pleasantville and You've Got Mail Blu-ray

Warner Home Video continued to release its catalog films in high-definition with two romantic comedies that bowed just in time for Valentine’s Day. Pleasantville, starring Reese Witherspoon (Penelope) and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) arrived on Blu-ray on Feb. 8, 2011, and You’ve Got Mail, starring Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition) and Meg Ryan (The Doors), on Feb. 1, 2011, each priced at $19.98.

In 1998’s PG-13 fantasy Pleasantville, brother and sister Maguire and Witherspoon, shy and outgoing, respectively, are transported into a black-and-white squeaky clean 1950s sitcom town called Pleasantville. When they bring their modern views to the town, things begin to sprout into color, changing the world and the characters. The movie, which also stars William H. Macy (Marmaduke), Joan Allen (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Jeff Daniels (The Answer Man), grossed $40 million when it was released in theaters.

The Blu-ray contains the same special features as the Platinum Series DVD released in 1998:

• commentary by writer/director Gary Ross
• isolated score track with commentary by composer Randy Newman
• “The Art of Pleasantville” featurette
• and Fiona Apple’s “Across the Universe” music video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Also released in theaters in 1998, You’ve Got Mail stars Hanks and Ryan as business rivals who fall for each other over the Internet. Based on the play by Miklos Laszlo and written and directed for the screen by Nora Ephron (Julie & Julia), the PG-rated movie also stars Greg Kinnear (The Last Song), Parker Posey (Superman Returns) and comedian Dave Chappelle. Seen as a follow-up of sorts to the highly successful romance Sleepless In Seattle, which also paired Hanks and Ryan, You’ve Got Mail grossed $115.7 million in theaters.

The Blu-ray includes the same special features as the Deluxe Edition DVD of the movie, released in 1998:

• featurettes “Delivering You’ve Got Mail” and “You’ve Got Chemistry” with the stars and filmmakers
• commentary by Ephron and producer Lauren Shuler Donner
• “HBO First Look: A Conversation With Nora Ephron”
• and Carole King’s “Anyone At All” music video.

Both movies are presented in 16×9 in their Blu-ray editions.
