Horror classic Magic, starring Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Ann-Margret (Old Dogs), got its high-definition debut on Oct. 12, 2010, when it was released on Blu-ray by Dark Sky Films, a subsidiary of independent film company The MPI Media Group.
The 1978 movie stars Hopkins as Corky Withers, a washed-up magician whose career resurges after he turns to ventriloquism with a foul-mouthed dummy called Fats. When he’s booked on national TV by his agent (Burgess Meredith of Rocky), Corky flees the required physical exam for fear that it would reveal his history of mental problems. He instead goes to a nearly deserted resort in the Catskills run by his childhood love Peggy (Ann-Margret), who’s now trapped in a loveless marriage with her high-school sweetheart (Ed Lauter of The Longest Yard).
When Peggy and Corky start a relationship, the wooden Fats starts to voice his objections, and when Corky decides to quit show business, Fats takes matters into his own hands, leading to threats, violence and murder.
Hopkins was nominated for Best Actor in the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards (the British equivalent of the Academy Awards) for his role in Magic, which was directed by Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) and written by Oscar winner William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).
The Blu-ray of Magic was priced at $24.98.
The horror movie has been on DVD since 2006.
