New Release: Hair High DVD

Microcinema released animator Bill Plympton’s satire Hair High on DVD on Nov. 30, 2010. Best known for his Oscar-nominated shorts Your Face (1987) and Guard Dog (1994), the highly regarded artist’s 2004 feature film carries a suggested retail price of $24.95.

A gothic high-school comedy with a Carrie-like story, Hair High focuses on Cherri (voiced by Sarah Silverman) and Rod (Dermot Mulroney), the unofficial kings and queen of their high school, and the new kid in town, who goes by the name of Spud (Eric Gilliland). When Spud accidentally offends the couple, he is forced to become Cherri’s slave. Naturally, they immediately hate each other, but of course, later they fall in love.

Cherri and Spud secretly decide to go to the prom together, and on prom night a rejected Rod forces their car off the road and into the lake. In true 1950s ballad style, their car sinks to the bottom of the lake as they share one last kiss. While the bodies of Cherri and Spud lie in a timeless embrace, Rod is successful in thwarting any investigation and is able to get away with murder.

On the night of the following year’s prom, the car magically comes to life and slowly drives out of the lake with Cherri and Spud, as if nothing had happened, only this time their bodies are in an advanced state of decomposition. But that doesn’t mean they still can’t attend the latest prom…

Other voices featured in Hair High include Ed Begley Jr., Beverly D’Angelo, Keith Carradine, David Carradine, Martha Plimpton, Matt Groening, Tom Noonan and Craig Bierko.
