Starring People magazine’s 2010 Sexiest Man Alive Ryan Reynolds, thriller Buried was released to the home market on Jan. 18, 2011, but only came out as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, digital download and video-on-demand — no separate DVD.
In Lionsgate‘s movie, Reynolds (The Green Lantern) plays Paul Conroy, a member of a civilian convoy in Iraq who has been beaten and buried in a wooden box by insurgents.
Armed only with a cell phone with a draining battery and a lighter, Reynolds has 90 minutes to save his own life by piecing together clues, including the voice of his kidnapper, to lead an team of special agents to his location.
The movie, which had a limited run in theaters and was an Official Selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, also stars Samantha Mathis (Broken Arrow).
The Buried Blu-ray/DVD combo pack was priced at $29.95 and includes the making-of featurette “Unearthing Buried.”

I’m interested in seeing how it sells. Especially not being on DVD anymore. Kudos for them doing the release this way. I think the movie was decently popular just not available. They were showing the trailer in the theaters here and we never got it as a release.
No separate DVD release means I won’t be buying it, because I don’t have a Blu-ray player. This is a bad move on their part; they are voluntarily cutting themselves out of the DVD market. People won’t pay twice as much for a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack if they don’t watch movies on Blu-ray.
I think this is the way of the future, as people of the lowest common denominator (those without Blu-Ray) are left by the wayside, as Blu-Ray is the future and regular dvd will be phased out, with the likes of VHS owners bitching about the inevitable end of their bulky medium. This film is spectacular, and a throw-back to Hitchcockian type thrillers of old, being equally visually, and mentally chilling. If you don’t own a Blu-Ray player invest in your future, and invest in this worthwhile film phenom.
I saw this in limited theatrical release in Milwaukee after it ran locally as part of the 2010 Milwaukee Film Festival – cinematically amazing… reading a synopsis and watching this film are two different experiences altogether. Its premise is most comparable to 127 HOURS in a way. Quite an accomplishment on a smaller budget.
Looks like I may be investing in a Blu-Ray Player before the year is up.
