Entertainment One released the Australian drama Beautiful Kate on DVD on Dec. 21, 2010, for a suggested retail price of $24.98.
Set against a forbidding landscape in the Australian Outback, the movie tells the story of Ned Kendall (Ben Mendelsohn, Animal Kingdom), his incestuous teenage relationship with his beautiful twin sister Kate (Sophie Lowe, The Clinic), and the emotional aftermath of a series of tragic events that unfolded when he was 16.
Told in parallel narratives of past and present, the film is set on a homestead in Wilpena Pound where Ned returns home after an absence of 20 years because his father Bruce (Bryan Brown, Along Came Polly) is dying. Along for the ride with Ned is his 21-year-old fiancée, Toni (Maeve Dermody, Black Water), a sexy waitress/wannabe actress who knows nothing about Ned’s family and is surprised to learn of the existence of his twin.
But after Toni stumbles upon Ned’s teen diary, which holds shocking revelations about the siblings’ struggles growing up in isolation, she flees back to the city, leaving father and son alone together. Ned begins to realize that he has wrongly held his father responsible for what happened all those years ago. With help from his younger sister Sally (Rachel Griffiths, TV’s Brothers & Sisters), Ned sees the truth for the first time and is finally able to begin an emotional journey of familial reconciliation.
Beautiful Kate was released in theaters in its native Australia but never in the U.S., though it did play a film festival or two.
