Creating a live-action version of Dr. Seuss‘ brilliant children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas is quite an undertaking, especially if you want to preserve the author/illustrator’s distinct style, and that’s just what director Ron Howard attempted with 2000 movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The fantasy movie tells the story of a nasty creature, the Grinch, who’s intent on stealing Christmas in the town of Whoville. But his plans are thwarted when a little girl, Cindy Lou Who, tries to befriend the grumpy Grinch. Like any good Christmas story, goodwill wins out in the end.
The cast includes Taylor Momsen (TV’s Gossip Girls), Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover), Molly Shannon (TV’s Saturday Night Live) and funny man Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) as the Grinch.
The film’s makeup design won an Academy Award, and the movie also was nominated for art direction and costumes.
Although we must admit being partial to the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas 1966 TV special, the movie grossed $260 million when it ran in theaters in 2001.
Offering up great visuals and fun, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is number 24 in Disc Dish‘s Top 25 movie list, and it’s available on DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
