Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released fantasy movie Alice in Wonderland on Blu-ray 3D on Dec. 7, 2010.
Directed by Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), the film was issued in a four-disc combo pack including the movie on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and a downloadable digital copy, priced at $49.99.
PG-rated Alice in Wonderland, which grossed $334 million in theaters earlier this year, is inspired by the beloved children’s books of Lewis Carroll. The film stars Johnny Depp (The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus) as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs) as the White Queen and Mia Wasikowska (The Kids Are All Right) as Alice.
Alice in Wonderland broke records when it opened in theaters in March, achieving the highest-grossing non-sequel opening weekend in history, the biggest March opening of all time, the biggest 3D opening of all time and the biggest IMAX opening of all time. To date, it’s the sixth highest-grossing worldwide film of all time and the third for Walt Disney Studios.
The family movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray in June 2010, and the Blu-ray 3D version includes the same special features as those on the earlier Blu-ray/DVD combo. The Blu-ray 3D disc does not contain any new bonuses.
Blu-ray 3D will not play on regular Blu-ray players. The 3D technology needs a Blu-ray 3D player, 3D TV and special glasses to be seen properly. And the 3D picture is the same quality as the 3D showings in theaters, not the old analog 3D picture that needs red/blue glasses.
Disney also brought out its classic animated version of Alice in Wonderland in a 60th Anniversary edition on DVD and Blu-ray in February 2011.
