Animated movie The Last Unicorn debuted in high-definition Blu-ray on Feb. 22, 2011, from Lionsgate.
The 1982 family fantasy film tells the story of a brave unicorn, who, with the help of a magician, fights an evil king obsessed with capturing unicorns. The movie features the voices of a host of well-known actors, including Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Robert Klein (Two Weeks Notice), Angela Lansbury (Beauty and the Beast), Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings franchise) and Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby) as the unicorn.
Based on the novel by Hugo Award-winning author Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn also showcases the artistry of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli (Ponyo) and music by America. The film was directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, the team behind 1977’s animated The Hobbit and 1970 Christmas special Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, among others.
Priced at $19.98, the Blu-ray is a Bly-ray/DVD combo pack and includes special features from the previously released DVD of the film, plus these new extras:
- commentary with Beagle and publisher Connor Cochran
- a featurette
- and an art contest gallery.

I’ve loved this movie since I could remember. It’s right up there with the Wizard of Oz! I think I sang the title song almost a million times when I was little.
I totally forgot about this movie until I saw this… I loved this movie too!
said in a press release on Think – Geek’s blog, “It was never our intention to cause a National crisis and misguide American citizens in regard to the differences between pig and unicorn. Detection by monitoring wells is also very difficult at lined landfills, which this proposed rubble dump would supposedly have had. From the Capitol to the Washington Monument crowds were as they showed on TV.
