The story of Jacques Mesrine, the last of the great French gangsters, is recounted in Mesrine: Killer Instinct, which Music Box Films Home Entertainment released on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 22, 2011.
The first film in a two-part crime saga, Mesrine: Killer Instinct stars Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Eastern Promises) as the flamboyant criminal who was declared “French Public Enemy Number One” and whose career included more than 20 years of kidnappings, robberies, murders and prison escapes in some half-dozen countries.
Directed by Jean-Francois Richet (Assault on Precinct 13), Mesrine: Killer Instinct tells of Jacques Mesrine’s early years: his return home after serving with the French army in the Algerian War in the late 1950s; his first experiences with crime, violence and the underworld; his intensifying criminal activities in France and across Europe; his complex and impassioned relationships with women; and his flight overseas from the French authorities to Canada in 1968.
Co-starring alongside Cassel are legendary French actor Gérard Depardieu (Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet), Roy Dupuis (Shake Hands With the Devil) and Gilles Lellouche (Little White Lies). Portraying the women in Mesrine’s life are popular European leading ladies: Cécile De France (Hereafter), Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) and Elena Anaya (Walking Vengeance).
The Blu-ray and DVD carry the suggested retail prices of $34.95 and $29.95, respectively.
Music Box released the second film in the two-part Jacques Mesrine saga, Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (also directed by Richet), on Blu-ray and DVD on March 29, 2011.
