New Release: Inspector Bellamy DVD

We would be doing the late great filmmaker Claude Chabrol (La Demoiselle d’Honneur) a grand disservice by not mentioning the Jan. 25, 2011, DVD release of his low-key but elegant French crime drama Inspector Bellamy from IFC Films. Inspector Bellamy was the last film the respected French New Wave director made before he died in September 2010 at the age of 80.

France’s great actor Gérard Depardieu (Mesrine: Killer Instinct) stars in the movie as Bellamy, a celebrated Parisian police officer. Bellamy is trying to enjoy a peaceful vacation with his bored wife (Marie Bunel of Chabrol’s A Girl Cut in Two), but murder travels with him. A mysterious man (Jacques Gamblin, Carnage) shows up with a deadly tale for Bellamy.

There’s also the unwanted arrival of Bellamy’s ne’er-do-well brother (Clovis Cornillac, A Very Long Engagement). Whether the appearance of these two men is linked and whether they have any connection to a local murder are puzzles the hardened Inspector Bellamy will have to solve.

Released in France in 2009, the film received a limited theatrical run in the U.S. in October 2010.

No bonus features have been announced for the DVD, which will carry a list price of $24.98.
