Glorious 39, a Hitchcockian thriller from England that seems to have had its title inspired by one of the Master of Suspense’s greatest films (1935’s The 39 Steps, but we didn’t have to tell you that), arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 15, 2011, from Entertainment One.
In the movie, Anne Keyes (Romola Garai, The Other Man) plays an attractive young woman who is enjoying modest success as a film actress; she’s also the adopted daughter of Parliament member Alexander Keyes (Bill Nighy, Pirate Radio).
One night, Alexander’s friend Hector (David Tennant, Hamlet) stops by for dinner and, during a heated conversation, makes no secret of his disapproval of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his efforts to appease Hitler’s Nazi regime. Later that evening, Hector is found dead of an apparent suicide. Anne, however, suspects foul play when she stumbles upon sinister, secret recordings of a pro-Hitler appeasement movement. When Anne tries to share this discovery with others, they’re soon found dead as well … and things get even worse for Anne from that point on.
Directed by Stephen Poliakoff (Gideon’s Daughter), this 2009 film stars a fine cast of other familiar British actors, including Julie Christie (Doctor Zhivago), Jenny Agutter (Logan’s Run), Christopher Lee (The Battle of the River Plate) and Jeremy Northam (Creation).
Glorious 39 premiered on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.S. following a run of international film festivals.
The DVD and Blu-ray each were priced at $24.98.
