What Dreams May Come, the visually stunning 1998 fantastical romantic drama directed by Vincent Ward (Map of the Human Heart), arrived on Blu-ray from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on May 3, 2011.
A fantastical romantic drama, you say? Well, how else to describe a film in which Robin Williams (Old Dogs) embarks on a supernatural journey beyond the realm of mortality so he can save the soul of the woman he loves?
The movie, based on the novel by Richard Matheson, tells the story of Chris Nielsen (Williams), who is killed in an accident but tries to remain close to his beautiful, still-living wife, Annie (Annabella Sciorra, TV’s The Sopranos). With the friendly spirit (Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ticking Clock) assigned to guide him, he begins to adapt to his new state of being in a idyllic setting that can best be described as bucolic and heavenly.
But when his distraught wife takes her own life, she is banished to an eternal damnation. Chris vows to find her so they can share eternity together, but no one has ever succeeded in rescuing a soul from such a horrific fate. With the help of his heavenly friends, Chris sets out on the most perilous and harrowing journey of his life (make that afterlife): a quest for everlasting love that will take him to hell and back.
The film features an array of Academy Award-winning visual effects, and we’re psyched to see how this gorgeous movie looks in its Blu-ray incarnation.
The film is also available as a special edition DVD chock full of bonus features.
The Blu-ray carries a list price of $26.98.
