The 2009 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award winner, The Cove debuted on high-definition Blu-ray on April 5, 2011, from Lionsgate.
Rated PG-13, the film follows former dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry (Flipper) and a team of elite free divers, special effects artists and animal lovers on a covert mission to penetrate a hidden cove in Japan where they uncover instances of animal abuse. As they shine a light on the horrors of the international dolphin trade, the filmmakers also uncover a serious threat to human health.
The Cove was released in a limited number of theaters in 2009 and on DVD the same year.
The new Blu-ray, which was priced at $19.99, includes the same special features that were on the DVD:
- audio commentary with director Louie Psihoyos and producer Fisher Stevens
- featurette “The Cove: Mercury Rising” about the hazards of mercury in fish
- deleted and extended scenes
- and behind-the-scenes footage of the covert gear used to capture the activities shown in the movie.
