Olive Films’ dipped back into the Paramount Pictures archive for the 1967 drama Hurry Sundown, directed by Otto Preminger (Skidoo) and starring Michael Caine (Inception), Jane Fonda (Barbarella) and Faye Dunaway (Bonnie and Clyde). The movie was released on DVD on May 17, 2011.
Based on K.B. Gilden’s novel, this movie about racial prejudice and emotional unrest in the 1940s Deep South turns on Henry Warren (Caine), an unscrupulous and racist landowner obsessed with buying up all available land in a Georgia farming town. Blocking his path are sharecroppers Rod McDowell (John Phillip Law, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad) and Reeve Scott (Robert Hooks, Passenger 57), one white and one black.
Adapted for the screen by Horton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Thomas C. Ryan (The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter), the film co-stars Diahann Carroll (TV’s Julia), Burgess Meredith (Magic), Robert Reed (TV’s The Brady Bunch) and George Kennedy (Airport).
No bonus features are on the Hurry Sundown DVD, which carries a list price of $24.95.
