Entertainment One released a restored and remastered edition of Italian filmmaker Vittorio De Sica’s (The Bicycle Thief) neorealist masterpiece movie Shoeshine on DVD on May 17, 2011.
In the film, two boys in post-war Rome — Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni) and Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi) — earn their living by shining the shoes of American soldiers. Close friends, the boys collect their saving in pursuit of a common goal: to buy a horse.
In need of more money, they get involved with a gang of older youths and their black market goods scam, which results in them being falsely accused of a crime. With their trial several months ahead of them, the pair is sent to a rough state juvenile detention center. An escape plan is conceived and executed, resulting in even more bad news and, ultimately, tragedy.
In 1948, Shoeshine received an Honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards to acknowledge its excellence, an award that was a precursor to what would later become the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award.
Presented in Italian with English subtitles, Entertainment One’s edition of Shoeshine carries a list price of $29.98.
Bonus features on this new DVD edition include the following:
- commentary by author Bert Cardullo
- cast interview
- featurette
