Paramount Home Entertainment released another 1980s movie on Blu-ray in May, Top Gun on Aug. 30, 2011. Unlike Beverly Hills Cop, however, this is not the film’s high-definition debut. Top Gun has been on Blu-ray since 2008, but this new Blu-ray version, which celebrates the movie’s 25th anniversary, comes with a digital copy of the film.
It’s hard to believe it has been 25 years since Tony Scott’s (Unstoppable) 1986 action film hit theaters, showing off the volleyball skills of the irrepressible Tom Cruise (Knight and Day, War of the Worlds) and Val Kilmer (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) — oh, and their flying skills, of course. The PG-rated movie stars Cruise as a rebellious student at an elite flying school who starts an affair with one of his teachers (Kelly McGillis, At First Sight). Anthony Edwards (TV’s ER), Tom Skerritt (Alien) and Meg Ryan (You’ve Got Mail) also star in the film.
After grossing $177 million when it ran in theaters, Top Gun never really went away, being released on DVD and now Blu-ray in multiple versions.
This latest Blu-ray release, priced at $19.99, has the same special features as the original high-def disc, which are:
- commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Scott, co-screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. and naval experts
- six-part documentary “Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun“
- multi-angle storyboards with optional commentary by Scott
- featurette “Best of the Best: Inside the Real Top Gun”
- a behind-the-scenes featurette
- “Survival Training Featurette”
- interviews with Cruise
- four music videos: “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins’, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, “Heaven In Your Eyes” by Loverboy and “Top Gun Anthem” by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens.
The only new part is that this release includes a downloadable digital copy of the movie.
