New Release: Pixar's Cars Blu-ray/DVD combo

Pixar's CarsWith Cars 2 revving up to hit theaters on June 24, 2011, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment brought Lightning McQueen, Mater and Doc Hudson back to high-definition Blu-ray on April 12, 2011. The original Cars has been available on Blu-ray since 2007, but the new version is a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, available in Blu-ray or DVD packaging.

The story about a hot shot rookie race car who gets stranded in a forgotten town on the old Route 66 right before his most important race, Cars features a truckload of well-known voices: Owen Wilson (Little Fockers) as Lightning McQueen; Bonnie Hunt (TV’s The Bonnie Hunt Show) as Sally Carrera; comedian Larry the Cable Guy as Mater; Paul Newman (Road to Perdition) as Doc Hudson; plus Cheech Marin (Cheech & Chong’s Hey Watch This), Tony Shalhoub (TV’s Monk), John Ratzenberger (Toy Story 3), Michael Keaton (The Other Guys) and the late comedian George Carlin.

Nominated for two Academy Awards (best animated film and best song for Randy Newman’s “Our Town”), the G-rated Pixar movie was a hit back in 2006, grossing $244 million in theaters, and has been a favorite on DVD and Blu-ray.

As well as the sequel coming to theaters in June, Disney is developing a spin-off, Planes, to be released only on DVD and Blu-ray in spring 2013.

Priced at $39.99, other than the DVD, this Blu-ray combo doesn’t have any special features that aren’t already available on the older Blu-ray. Here’s the list:

  • “Carfinder” game
  • Cine-Explore
  • deleted scenes
  • Radiator Springs featurettes
  • “Inspiration for Cars” featurette
  • “Mater and the Ghostlight” short film
  • and Pixar’s “One Man Band” short film.

Do you already have this in your library? Do you plan to buy this new version?

It’s surprising the Blu-ray/DVD doesn’t even have a sneak peek at Cars 2. So, instead, we’re providing one. Here’s the trailer for Cars 2:
