New Release: Black Death Blu-ray and DVD

Black Death movie scene

Actions speak louder than words for Sean Bean in Black Death.

On May 10, 2011, Magnolia released the British medieval action film Black Death, about the outbreak of the bubonic plague across England during the 14th century, on Blu-ray and DVD.

Written and directed by Christopher Smith (Triangle) and starring Sean Bean (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief), the movie opens as Europe begins to fall under the shadow of the “Black Death.” As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife and even the church begins to lose its grip on the people. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach, and there is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life.

Ulric (Bean), a fearsome, sword-slashing knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. He enlists the guidance of a novice monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne, Glorious 39) to lead him and his band of mercenary soldiers to the marshland, but Osmund has other motives for leaving his monastery…

Black Death was issued as a video-on-demand title in the U.S. in early February following its premiere on DVD in Sweden, Russia, Italy and other far-flung locales.

The Blu-ray and DVD carry the list prices of $29.98 and $26.98, respectively, and contain the following bonus features:

  • making-of featurette
  • behind-the-scenes footage
