Paramount Home Entertainment hasn’t made it official yet, but it looks like the long-awaited Blu-ray version of James Cameron’s record-breaking romance film, Titanic, will be coming next year.
Cameron has said that Titanic would be released on the high-definition format around the time the movie arrives back in theaters in a worldwide re-release in 3D. The date for Titanic‘s 3D theatrical release has been set for April 6, so the only question now is whether the movie will be available on Blu-ray that month or will come out in the 2012 fourth quarter in a Blu-ray 3D version.
The romance drama is the second highest-grossing film of all time (more than $600 million in the U.S. alone) and one of only three films to have earned a record 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Cameron. The film also made households names of its stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
Telling a fictional tale of rebellious love and a stunning blue diamond aboard the ill-fated maiden voyage of the real-life ship, Titanic‘s cast also includes Kathy Bates, Billy Zane and Bill Paxton.
Our guess for the Blu-ray release? Paramount will hold off until the summer or fourth quarter, after the new 3D re-release has made its round of theaters. And then, the movie will be offered in a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD pack and a Blu-ray-only version for a less expensive price.
Cameron also could do a split release a la Avatar, by bringing out Titanic as an uncompressed no frills Blu-ray 3D in the summer and a bigger, multi-disc Blu-ray/Blu-ray 3D set in the fourth quarter packed with special features.
The last time Titanic was released on disc was the Three-Disc Special Collector’s Edition DVD in 2005, which came with these extras:
- 29 deleted scenes
- alternate ending
- branching viewing option with background materials
- production and special effects featurettes
- “Breaking New Ground” TV special
- visual effects breakdown of the film’s stunts
- and the music video of “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion.
We’re guessing all of these plus more will be on the Blu-ray release. Cameron usually does right by his home-viewing fans.
