Trainspotting, the heroin-fueled drama that’s now considered to be one of the definitive films of the 1990s, arrived on Blu-ray Disc for the first time in the U.S. courtesy of Lionsgate on Sept. 13, 2011. It carries a list price of $19.99.
A nearly too-cool look at the misadventures of a group of heroin addicts in late 1980s Edinburgh, the film zeroes in on the life of one junkie, Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor, I Love You Phillip Morris), who attempts to kick the habit and pull his life together. Unfortunately, his efforts seem to be regularly thwarted by his friends, whose lives of drugs and crime continue to play a part in his own life.
One of those movies that seems to have launched a zillion careers, 1996’s Trainspotting also stars Ewen Bremner (Match Point), Jonny Lee Miller (Showtime’s Dexter), Kevin McKidd (TV’s Grey’s Anatomy ), Robert Carlyle (TV’s SGU: Stargate Universe) and Kelly Macdonald (TV’s Boardwalk Empire). Oh, and it was the second feature film to be directed by Danny Boyle (127 Hours), the Oscar-winning helmer of Slumdog Millionaire. All in all, not a bad pedigree.
The Trainspotting Blu-ray Disc imports all the extras that appeared on the 2004 Miramax Collector’s Edition DVD, including an audio commentary, deleted scenes, interviews and a pair of featurettes. A digital copy will also be included.
The film has been previously released on Blu-ray in Canada.
