The acclailmed 1999 drama-romance movie The Cider House Rules is based on John Irving’s best-selling 1985 novel.
The film tells the story of Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire, Pleasantville), an orphan who is eager to leave the confines of his orphanage to explore the world. A favorite of the facility’s director, Homer has been groomed to be the successor to Dr. Larch (Michael Caine, Dressed to Kill), a doctor who provides safe, albeit illegal abortions. After meeting Wally (Paul Rudd, Dinner for Schmucks) and Candy (Charlize Theron, The Road), the doctor performs the procedure on the pregnant Candy, and Homer leaves with them to work on Wally’s apple farm. Drawn in by her beauty, Homer falls in love with Candy, which leads to Homer learning powerful lessons about life and love.
Directed by Lasse Hallström (My Life as a Dog) and written for the screen by novelist Irving himself, The Cider House Rules was nominated for seven Academy Awards and subsequently brought home two statuettes: one for Michael Caine for Best Supporting Actor and one for Irving for Best Adapted Screenplay.
