One of the more off-beat independent films of 2011, The Future is written and directed by the cult filmmaker Miranda July, whose 2005 Me You and Everyone We Know is one of our favorites!
When a thirtysomething couple (July and Hamish Linklater of TV’s The New Adventures of Old Christine) decides to adopt a stray cat whom they name “Paw Paw,” their entire perspective on life changes dramatically. The decision literally alters the course of time (and space!), while testing their faith in themselves and each other.
Also starring David Warshofsky (There Will Be Blood) and Isabella Acres (TV’s Better Off Ted), the dark comedy, which is partially narrated by Paw Paw, was nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear Award at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival. The movie opened on a limited basis in theaters in the U.S. in July (following a domestic festival run), grossing $400.000.
Bonus features on the DVD of the movie include the following:
- commentary with Miranda July
- featurette
