Arena movie scene

Kellan Lutz gets fired up in Arena.

Rising star Kellan Lutz (the Twilight series) and old school bad-ass Samuel L. Jackson (Mother and Child) face off in the 2011 action film Arena.

Lutz stars as David Lord, a fireman kidnapped from his ordinary life and thrust into the savage world of a modern day gladiatorial arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses. To buy his freedom from the sadistic arena overlord (Jackson), Lord agrees to engage in a series of lethal bouts. As the body count escalates and the showdowns grow even nastier, Lord unleashes a torrent of bloody carnage and reveals a secret that threatens to tear down the entire enterprise.

Directed by veteran visual effects supervisor Jonah Loop (Collateral), Arena also stars Daniel Dae Kim (TV’s Hawaii Five-O) and Nina Dobrev (TV’s The Vampire Diaries).

Arena‘s premiere in the U.S. is on DVD, and by the look of its hard-hitting trailer — filled with violence and a frequently shirtless Lutz — the movie appears to have unabashedly earned its R rating. And Lutz was reportedly injured during the shoot — a mishap with a machete! — so we’re thinking it must have been a tough production.

Here’s that trailer we were talking about:
