The Change-UpThere’s nothing particularly original about the premise of comedy movie The Change-Up, in which two men — single lothario Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern) and married father Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) — magically change places. It’s Freaky Friday or Vice Versa or a list of others, with grown men switching places instead of a parent and child. That the magic happens when the two men are peeing in a fountain is original.

The R-rated movie does boast a good comic cast, however. As well as Reynolds and Bateman, who are always best in funny roles, the film also has Leslie Mann (I Love You Phillip Morris), Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) and Alan Arkin (City Island).

The been-there-done-that feeling of the movie was probably a big reason why it grossed $36 million in its quick run in theaters, less than other recent comedies. But with that cast, the film is worth a look on disc. Plus, The Change-Up was directed by David Dobkin, who knows a thing or two about comedy, having helmed Wedding Crashes and Fred Claus.

The Change-Up Blu-ray boxBoth the DVD and Blu-ray contain the version of the movie that screened in theaters as well as an unrated version that’s five minutes longer.

The DVD offers these special features:

  • commentary with director David Dobkin on both versions of the film
  • “Family Matter” featurette
  • “Time For a Change” featurette
  • gag reel
  • fist fight deleted scene

The Blu-ray also has a downloadable digital copy of the unrated version of the movie, which expires on April 26, 2012, as well as Universal’s usual Blu-ray extras, My Scenes and the Pocket Blu app.
